My First Post! or “Un bon croquis vaut mieux qu’un long discours”

We all know the adage “A picture is worth a thousand words.”  As a person who loves to write, I’ve always taken exception to that saying.  I mean, it depends on the words and the picture, right?  If I were to weigh one of my 8th grade art projects against, say, ten of Shakespeare’s sonnets, well… you can see where I’m going with this.

However, I have a feeling that most blog-readers don’t have much patience for long-winded writing.  Short and sweet is where it’s at.  Therefore, my blog is going to emphasize pictures rather than text.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure I’ll ramble on plenty at times, but I’m officially declaring that imagery will carry at least as much emphasis as words here.

Apparently, some historians credit the expression “A picture is worth a thousand words” to Napoleon, who originally said:  Un bon croquis vaut mieux qu’un long discours  or  “A good sketch is better than a long speech.”  Since Napoleon wasn’t really known for art or speeches, I’m not sure why we should listen to him, but I figure including a quote – especially one in French – lends a certain, um, gravitas to my first posting.

Anyway, welcome to my blog!

  1. A Nikon for your photographic journey! Nice choice (of course I’m prejudiced). May your travels, inside and outside your garden, bring you much joy and lots of opportunities for learning. I’m pleased you visited my blog and like my work. Maybe we’ll run into each other at the Arboretum some day!

  2. Nice topic selection — especially the monster grill subject, which I’ve never considered before but about which agree with you completely! I have five black walnuts in my yard, too, and find them a constant challenge. We lost a front windshield to one before taking it down a few years ago (it was growing over the driveway). I look forward to reading the blog.

  3. So happy your blogging. As a wordy as hell blogger, I’m all about the writing, too, but of course, a little eye candy never hurt. I probably lose people all the time after the second paragraph. But good content is good content whether its words or images.

Someone once told me in the bloging world, your only as good as your last blog. And it seems true, NOW is the only reality in the internet world. Quality is better than quantity!

Looking forward to reading more. Is there a way to add a subscribe by email?

    • Actually, Thomas, the only reason I plan to keep my posts short is so that I can post more often. The writing part comes more naturally to me, but my original intent was to show off my new photography skillz as well. I’m not sure it’s going to work out that way, though, since I’m realizing that expensive new camera doesn’t necessarily equal great pictures. Who knew?
